UMKC Today website
The UMKC Today website is the university’s primary repository for news. Updated daily by the public relations team, the website needs to be easy to navigate and maintain. Because the site is intended to reach all of the university’s audiences, both internal and external, filtering and categorization are essential for keeping things organized.
This project marked several firsts in my personal development. I had worked with WordPress before, but never customized a theme to this degree. In the development of the UMKC Today theme, I added functionality for feature stories, created custom fields for unique post content and page templates for various categories. Based on the high number of mobile visits to the old site, I also used the opportunity to learn responsive design, a relatively new concept at the time, in order to improve mobile compatibility.
